RSS is doing social service without trying to derive political mileage: ‘Letter to the Editor’ in OUTLOOK

Letter’s to The Editor in OUTLOOK, June 08, 2015 Issue.

I consider myself an Indian first, then a Hindu and don’t subscribe to the ideology of the RSS or BJP. Yet, the amount of stick the Sangh parivar takes from the media and other parties—right or wrong—compels me to narrate a real-life experience. During Partition, I was in Jalandhar, where my father was posted. I was about seven; the riots in our part of town started when one Hindu hawker was killed in front of my house. Trouble broke out like wildfire. Firearms in hand, my father and elder brother would stand guard on the roof. There was no sign of the police. Then, I saw people in khaki shorts and white shirts, sticks in hand, appear from nowhere. The RSS volunteers guarded our locality, saw to it there was no further trouble, took care of Muslim bodies and buried them with respect. They were doing social service without trying to derive political mileage. I think the younger generation should also have access to stories such as this, for a nuanced perspective.

Kochi June 3: Sri Mohan Kookkiliya, 82 years, Senior RSS Pracharak of Kerala passed away in Kochi on Wednesay night. He served as Pranth Karyalaya Pramukh for a long time and Pranth Vyavastha Pramukh of Kerala.

Mohan Kookkiliya hails from Udupi district of Karnataka, went to Kerala along with family members, joined RSS and later became a RSS Pracharak. He earlier served in Corporation Bank at Thalassery. He took active participation in RSS in 1960’s. In 1961 he completed his Truteeya Varsh Sangh Shiksha Varg at Nagpur. In 1970 he became RSS Pracharak, dedicated himself for Sangh related office works at RSS Pranth Karyalaya. Also he served as Secretary of Rashtra Dharma Parishath.

Popularly known as ‘Mohanji‘ amongst Swayamsevaks across Kerala, Mohan Kookkiliya was under treatment at Sudhindra Medical Mission in Kochi. The cremation will be held at Pacchalam Smashan at 4pm on June 4th, Thursday.

RSS Sah-sarakaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Sah Bouddhik Pramukh J Nandakumar and several other senior RSS functionaries expressed their condolences on demise of Mohan Kookkiliya.

‘Mohanji was a Karmayogi': J Nandakumar

“Since last few months, the health condition of Sri Mohanji was highly deteriorating. When I received the news of sad demise of Sri Mohanji, I could not believe that my most respected Mohanji is no more here in this physical world. Personally it was a great shock for me because Mohanji looked after me and literally brought up me in the Pranth Karyalaya. In a way he was my father and mother as I stayed under his guardianship in Madhav Nivas during my early college days. Pain inexplicable throbbing in me. I am feeling as if I’m left all alone in the universe. I know fully well that there is no need of my prayer for him to attain Saayujya, he a true Karmayogi and Tapasvi in the real sense of the word has already passed through Suryamandal and reached Vishnuloka, Still I am praying for my satisfaction and perfection. I express my heartfelt condolences”, said J Nandakumar, RSS Akhil Bharatiya Sah Prachar Pramukh.

RSS Sangh Shiksha Varg: Moulding men with capital ‘M’ for a mission

The scorching heat of this hottest May in Nagpur does not deter these 870-odd youths from following their rigorous daily routine that begins at 4 am and goes on till the lights are put off at 10 pm. The routine includes varied physical exercises and yoga in the morning, group discussions on various current issues, lectures, and evening drills. The participants from Kanyakumari to Kashmir and Gujarat to Manipur brave the hot weather and sunburns of Nagpur to acquaint them with the techniques of the organization so that they can become vehicles of its horizontal and vertical growth.

Yes. We are talking about the ongoing summer training camp of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Nagpur- the fountainhead of the largest Hindu organization of the world. This particular camp at Nagpur is all the more important because it is the graduating pedestal for its committed and dedicated activists. Those who have completed first two years’ training in the RSS are allowed for this Third Year training camp at Nagpur.

The selected swayamsevaks from various states of India come to stay at Nagpur for a period of 25 days and receive training in RSS doctrines and ideology and techniques. The camp is held in Reshambag area where the ‘Samadhi’ of RSS founder Dr Hedgewar and memorial of his immediate successor Sri Golwalkar Guruji is located.

This tradition of summer training camp has a unique place in RSS history and growth. This tradition is continuing for the last 85 years in the 90-year history of RSS barring the years when the RSS was banned in 1948 following the murder of the Mahatma and in 1975 during the internal emergency declared by Indira Gandhi.

RSS is not new to the people now-a-days. It is everywhere in the news, discussions and debates. Especially in the recent days after the BJP-led NDA Government under Narendra Modi came to power, RSS is more in the news and public discourse. The media try to bring it in any discussion, and the politicians attempt to drag it and embroil it in any controversy they lay their hands on. But they are yet to get success in their attempts to malign the RSS. On the other hand the common people have felt more and more assured with the growing influence of RSS in various spheres of national and social life.

And all the credit for this goes to those thousands of swayamsevaks trained in these camps, who with dedication and commitment serve the society in the most selfless manner. That is why these training camps occupy the most important place in the RSS plans and programs.

The swayamsevaks are the very backbone of RSS. They are instrumental in spreading the work and fulfilling the mission of Sangh under the guidance of their respective adhikaris or pracharaks. Dr Hedgewar, the founder understood this very well. Thus, to mould the sterling leadership of the future, he introduced the concept of summer training camps for the RSS swayamsevkas as early as 1927.

Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, RSS Founder

Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, RSS Founder

That was convenient also. For, most of the swayamsevaks were students and have long summer vacations. So, in the beginning the training camp was designed for 40 days from May 1 to June 10 from morning 5 to 9 in the evening. Initially this camp was known as ‘Summer Camp’. Later it was known as “Officers’ Training Camp” (OTC) as the camps were perceived to be training classes to mould capable RSS officers who would carry forward the mission of RSS towards its goal. After 1950, these OTCs were replaced by more indigenous nomenclature “Sangh Shiksha Varg” (SSV). But the older swayamsevaks are still more familiar with OTC than SSV.

In the initial days more stress was laid on military drills and physical exercises for imbibing discipline. The orders were mostly in English. These drills were displayed during the public functions of the Sangh and would leave a deeper impact on the public psyche then. The founder Dr Hedgewar once explained the objective of this camp. He said: “This is a special kind of training. We conduct these camps to create specially qualified activists who would carry forward the Sangh work. Our aim is to create an activist who would understand the vision of RSS and dedicate maximum time for Sangh with deep commitment for mission and an attitude to mix in the society while doing Sangh work.”

The English orders were gradually replaced by the indigenous orders by 1939-40. As the Sangh work progressed and spread to other regions another such training camp was started in Pune in 1935. The timing for Pune camp was from April 22 to June 2 and Dr Hedgewar used to stay in that camp up to May 15 and afterwards in the Nagpur camp. He would personally meet each and every swayamsevak and establish with him most cordial relations inspiring him to devote time and energy for the Sangh work. In 1938, one such camp was held at Lahore.

According to a very senior RSS worker late B N Wardpande, these 40-day camps used to have entertainment programs every Saturday and a weekly off on each Sunday. Later these weekly offs were curtailed and the overall period of the training camp was reduced to 30 days and to 25 days in the recent past.

Initially, the selection process for the participants was through the respective shakhas. After some time selected students were sent to neighboring villages to start the RSS shakha during the summer vacation which began in April. They would stay there for a month, start a shakha and identify some newcomers who could take up the responsibility later and bring them to the camp. The syllabus was divided into three-year course. The first two year training is given at the respective provinces and the third year training is planned at Nagpur only.

Nagpur has a unique place and importance in the history of RSS. The RSS was founded here in Nagpur by Dr Hedgewar. Initially, all the prominent Sangh workers from Nagpur fanned out to various provinces and established the Sangh thought firmly in their respective areas of operation. The Reshambag premise which is known as ‘Karmabhumi’ of Dr Hedgewar now sports a full-fledged training centre with all modern facilities. The ‘Samadhi’ of Dr Hedgewar, his ‘Smruti Mandir’ and memorial of Sri Guruji is also located at this place. As such this is the land of inspiration for all the swayamsevaks. Hence, the Third Year Sangh Shiksha Varg is held essentially at Nagpur only.

The Third Year SSV at Nagpur is unique in many ways. The swayamsevaks come from different provinces of the country thus presenting a miniature India with all its inherent diversities and underlying principle of unity. They speak different languages, dress differently and have different food habits. But stay together as brethrens; communicate in broken Hindi, try to learn each-other’s languages and foster unbreakable friendship and bonds of love and affection. This year there are participants who speak as many as 16 different tongues! They bear all the expenses of the camp including 25-days food, travelling, uniform etc.

As the RSS work spread to new areas bringing in its ambit senior members of the society, the RSS leadership thought of starting separate camps for them. Thus an idea of separate camp for swayamsevaks between the age group of 40-60 materialized. Such camps are held at an interval of two years. More stress in laid on ideological and philosophical indoctrination besides in-depth training in sewa, prachar, gram vikas and disaster management program. The services of such trained senor swayamsevaks are utilized mostly in the multi-faceted service projects run by RSS and its affiliates countrywide.

The syllabus for these camps also underwent changes according to changing needs. The initial stress on more physical exercises has given way to yoga and unarmed combat techniques called ‘Niyuddh’ in RSS parlance. The most topical subjects like disaster management, prachar, service activities and rural development and bio-farming are added to the syllabus.

There is a selection process for the first year training camp too. In order to sift suitable candidates for this camp a primary training camp is held for a week’s duration. The number of participants in these primary camps or ‘prathmik shiksha varg’ (PSV) has also shown an encouraging upward movement. It is from these camps the first year trainees are selected finally.

Each camp has a ‘Sarvadhikari’ who represents the Sarsanghchalak. This year (2015 ) Sri Govind Singh Tank of Chittore is the Sarvadhikari of Nagpur camp while Yashvant Bhai Chaudhary of Gujarat is Karyawah. Senior RSS functionary Arun Kumar is the ‘Guardian’ (Palak Adhikari) of the camp.

This year the RSS organized 64 first year and 12 Second year training camps countrywide. In 2014 there were 59 First year training camps with participation of 15,332 swayamsevaks from 9609 places while 3531 registered their attendance in 16 Second year training camps from 2902 places. The Third Year training camp at Nagpur recorded presence of 709 swayamsevaks from 657 places in the country. This year the number is increased to 876 participants.

RSS has its avowed mission to take this country to the highest pinnacle of glory. Swayamsevak is the instrument in achieving this goal and shakha is the way. To make this instrument more effective and capable to fulfil this mission such camps are held. The Prime Minister, who had gone through the rigors of RSS training has defined this mission in a most beautiful sentence of “Sab ka Saath—Sab ka Vikas”. The RSS swayamsevaks have fanned out to the every nook and corner of the country through the network of more than 1.5 lakh service projects awakening the tribals, Dalits, oppressed and exploited lots of the society to enlist their participation and role in fulfilment of its mission. The SSVs are part of the ongoing ‘Sadhana’ towards achievement of national reconstruction mission of RSS.

Houston: The Houston chapter of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh USA (HSS) held its tenth annual Hindu Sangathan Divas conference on Saturday, May 30, at the Sri Govindaji Goudiya Matha. Representatives of about 50 Hindu organizations from the Houston area attended the conference.

Keynote address delivered by Ved Nanda, Professor of International Law and HSS USA president.

Keynote address delivered by Ved Nanda, Professor of International Law and HSS USA president.

Hindu Sangathan Divas provided a platform for representatives of Houston area Hindu organizations the opportunity to network with each other under one roof, learn from each other’s experiences and challenges, while at the same time maintaining their autonomy.

After an introduction session, representatives attended one of three parallel breakout sessions, covering “Community Outreach through International Yoga Day (IYD),” “Synergizing Sewa Activities in Houston Hindu Organizations,” and “Creating Second Generation Hindu Youth Leadership.” Each breakout session included a presentation from an experienced panel followed by discussion.

The first group concentrated on making the IYD to be held at the George Brown Convention Center on Saturday, June 21 a huge success. The panelists discussed ways of promoting the event through mass outreach via media, email, social network sites and word of mouth. They all agreed that it needed to be made attractive to all segments of society and make it a vehicle to propagate the benefits of Yoga as a primary tool of health.

HSS USA 2015 Day

The second group concurred that sewa related activities can be done on an individual level and the importance of being environment friendly by “Going green” was emphasized. On a community level, sewa activities can be done by helping the poor, engage the youth, and help in disaster situations like

Nepal earthquake relief. Current areas of focus are challenges faced by Hindu senior citizens and international students. The third group comprising mainly of young individuals considered several issues including the need for next generation leadership and the challenges that they are facing. Since there are cultural and communication differences between generations, a few simple and involved activities encompassing matching interests and talents to temple activities could bridge the gap. Public speaking among the youth should be encouraged. Organizations should also consider sponsoring different programming tailored for different age groups to keep second-generation Hindus involved. Providing an anonymous forum for youth to ask questions would also help in getting some of the questions posed by the youngsters answered.

Following the breakout sessions, attendees heard the keynote address delivered by Ved Nanda, professor of International Law and HSS USA president. He saluted the Houston Hindu organizations on coming together as a vibrant and dynamic community. He glorified the Hindu ideals of pluralism, inclusiveness, selfless service, spiritual way of life, devotion and kindness towards humanity and above all the ideal of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – viewing the world as one family.

The hall was filled to capacity with very excited, enthusiastic members from all participating organizations. The facilities and hospitality offered by the youth volunteers and members of the Sri Goudiya Temple were remarkable. The day’s activities ended with Arati and Prasad. The conference was executed like a well oiled machine due to the sincere efforts of all volunteers of HSS.

ABVP welcomes and supports IIT-Madras’s decision to de-recognize anti-social group

Chennai June 7: Recently, Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle, an ‘Independent Student Body’ was de-recognized by IIT Madras. De-recognition of the student body was due to non-following of the guidelines prescribed for an Institute student body.

Hue and cry generated by APSC’s views and controversial pamphlets and by the media claims the freedom of speech curbed. The pamphlets provoke divisive thoughts accusing IITM as ‘under brahminical tyranny’ and ‘fight towards liberating the mass from the clutches of Hinduism’.   Political parties started fishing in troubled waters to gain publicity from the internal matter of IITM.

Backing the decision of de-recognition of IIT M, ABVP National Secretary Shri Shreehari Borikar issued a press statement in Delhi.

Press Statement :
ABVP supports IIT-Madras’decision to de-recognize anti-social group:
Shreehari Borikar IIT Madras administration has taken steps to curb the ongoing antisocial activities of a student group named “Ambedkar Periyar Study Circle” by de-recognizing it meaning thereby that it will not be able to use the IIT symbol and name. ABVP welcomes this step of IIT administration. Unfortunately many media groups and political parties have misreported that, this student group has been banned, which is not true. This particular student group has been indulging in spreading social tensions through their verbal violence aimed at religious Hindus in an institute known for its academic excellence. This group has been targeting the faith and feelings of thousands of students in the campus and that is why they complained about its activities.
Educational institutions should not be used for anti-religion and anti-social propaganda. Not surprisingly, many anti-national, anti-Hindu organizations have opposed this move of the IIT. The Congress’ double speaks have also been exposed through this issue. I would like to ask three simple questions on this issue to Shri Rahul Gandhi:
1) Do you want to transform an excellent educational institute like IIT in to a center of political propaganda and fights?
2) Do you not believe in India’s Constitution written by Dr.Ambedkar? If you did you would not become spokesperson of these people whose are spreading social disharmony?
3) Is the meaning of ‘freedom of expression ‘limited to abusing a particular religion? By raising this particular issue, does Mr. Rahul Gandhi aim to spread tensions in Educational institutions?
ABVP condems the words and actions of Shri.Rahul Gandhi on this issue. He is playing in the hands of the communist propagandists who are mischievously playing the caste card on the issue to polarize the students.

Coimbatore June 7: The Hindu Munnani has called upon the Tamil Nadu Government to hand over the control of Hindu religious places of worship to independent trusts. The trusts must ensure that revenue generated from these places are solely utilised to develop the temples. It also demanded scrapping of ‘darshan’ fees in all temples.

This was among the 14 resolutions passed during the seventh state-level conference and centenary anniversary celebration of Thanulinga Nadar, one of the first Presidents of the organisation, here on Sunday.

It also passed resolutions that demanded legislation to prevent smuggling of cattle, condemned the demolishing of Hindu places of worship for road construction and sought making Tamil medium of education mandatory till Class V.

Addressing the conference, Hindu Munnani founder Ramagopalan paid homage to various Hindu leaders killed in Tamil Nadu. He said that Hindu leaders must always travel with company as a precautionary measure.

Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) joint general secretary Dattatreya Hosabale said that a Ram Temple would be constructed in Ayodhya in another five years.

Meanwhile, the Madras High Court, in a special sitting on Sunday, granted permission to Hindu Munnani to take out a procession, just hours before it was scheduled to start. While permitting the conference, the Coimbatore City Police, had refused to allow the rally. It proceeded on a 2.5-km route starting near Tidel Park, proceeded through Karumbukadai before culminating at the ground near Codissia Trade Fair Complex, the conference venue. It began at 4.40 p.m., even as the Madras High Court ruling came at 3.45 p.m. Heavy security was posted along this route and various parts of the city.

In his inaugural speech Mangesh Bhende said,” Bharat had a very good system of democracy since ancient times. We had judiciary system here in our villages. We had women judges at the village courts. Impartial judgement were delivered. Rural system was intertwined with mutual confidence and trust within the villagers, hence was known for peace and harmony”.
“We are not measuirng our society by economic strength. However, literature quotes that we had very rich Kingdoms in ancient times. Mahapadmananda had huge wealth at his time. Each individual was contributing so greatly for the wealth of the society.” said Mangesh Bhende.

“Unfortunately Villages is getting deserted, becoming vruddhashramas. Migration of youth from the village is a srious problem. All these happened due to wrong path we took for rural empowerment since Independence. The then Prime Minister Nehru’s theories and principles on development were coated with western mindset. To remain Bharat as Bharat each Individual should contribute for the society. Each villager should be proud and should have respect for his village. If there is a problem in the village, should try correct there itself.” said Mangesh Bhende.

Grama Sangama 2015 (3)

“There are several examples of individuals who contributed greatly for the upliftment of their village. Anna Hazare has set a great example for his contributions for the Raleganasiddhi in Maharashtra. The development of the village we call upon is not just economy oriented. There are socio-economic problems in society. We need to focus on eradicating such problems. To bring such a social tranformation, can we do the following?
1. Samajik Shiksha (promoting literacy)
2. Samajik Samskara. (Behaviour with others, members of house, other villagers, outsiders).
3. Samajik Samarasata. (Social Harmony)
4. Samajik Suraksha (Social Security)
Hence we have to try our best individualyl or as a team for the comprehensive betterment of the village.” urged Mangesh Bhende.

Bharat should remain Bharat: Dr Balasubramaiam

Dr Balasubramaniam addressing

Dr Balasubramaniam addressing

Addressing on the occasion, noted social worker Dr Balasubramaiam said ” Since Independence most of the governments ha spent huge amount of money for rural development. But a comprehensive rural development has not happened. Its due to wrong policies and incorrect approach in vision for the rural development. Bharat should remain Bharat. No need to equate or to become country like Singapore, as few of our politicians say. We need to introspect our plan on rural development”.

“One of my American student had once said that, This is the time to copy India and Indian models for America. India was economically leading the world for 16 centuries since AD. India gave importance not just for economy. Our priority was human resource and human capital.” said Dr Balasubramahiam.

“Need of the hour is making each individual socially aware. We need to focus on our Human Capital and Social Capital is essential. Economic Valuation of the society is not necessary. Ideals and teachings from great persons like Vivekananda ideals will help for such a development, by creating men with a social thinking. Each Indian should dedicate one year for the social cause, for upliftment of his own village” urged Dr Balasubramaniam.
